1966 Buffaloes "Hale Irwin"
(Authentic Reproduction)

The 7-3 Buffs were a bona fide Big Eight power with great rushing by FB Wilmer Cooks, the Big Eight's top scorer who ran up 594 yards, and HB William Harris. Soph center Mike Montler returned from three years in the Marine Corps to play football and terrorize defenses with his 240 pounds of muscle. DE Sam Harris and safety Dick Anderson were the All Conference standouts on defense as was CB Hale Irwin who also earned three letters in golf, a sport he later became quite famous at (please click here on Hale Irwin's story to read more about Helmet Hut and Hale). Crowder changed the Buff's helmet, taking the gold shell and adding a white one-inch center stripe, black one-half-inch flanking stripes, and maintained the black three-inch thin rounded side numerals that allowed for easier player identification.
