A scarlet shell with a flamboyant cream colored "flying IU" interlocked-letter logo on each side of the helmet was augmented by a cream-colored mask as former NFL QB and assistant coach Sam Wyche took over. Anticipating a high powered offensive attack with QB Steve Bradley, the fans enjoyed a record-setting fourteen TD passes but not the seventeen INT's that he threw with those completions. Anemic running with Orlando Brown the leader with but 312 yards hurt the pro-styled attack but OT Kevin Allen, later to run into legal trouble as a pro player, was effective up front. Losing Mark Weller hurt the LB'ing crew although Joe Fitzgerald played well behind a poor D-line. The 3-8 finish was enough to make Wyche feel that a job with the Bengals was better than staying in Bloomington and this one-year helmet went with him.    Bill Mallory had a lengthy and largely successful tenure from 1984 through '96 and IU appeared six bowl games during that time. Under Cam Cameron and Gerry DiNardo, they again hit the skids but were on the upswing under Terry Hoeppner who tragically succumbed to a brain tumor in 2007. Assistant Bill Lynch, the former head coach at Ball State ascended to the head coaching spot and hopes remain high for a Hoosier revival.
