Once again, Phil Dickens was given a vote of confidence despite the team's ongoing inability to win and again he altered the uniform for the 1962 season, introducing an all crimson shell that remained as the standard headgear color until Dickens was relieved as head coach at the end of the '64 season. HB Marv Woodson again was the leading rusher with 540 yards and receiver with 15 catches. He made All Conference while also leading the team in scoring, interceptions, punt and kickoff returns, the latter mark being the best in the Big 10. His all around play would bring him to the Steelers as a two-way performer from 1964 until mid-way through the '69 season where he retired with the Saints. Teamed with wingback Nate Ramsey who graduated into an eleven year career with the Eagles and Saints as a DB, more than a 3-6 record could have been expected but numerous sophs, most notably FB-LB Tom Nowatzke, had to handle the load on a team lacking in depth. For the first time in fifteen seasons, the Hoosiers defeated Purdue which for many, made the year a success. 1963 presented the prospect of Nowatzke at FB leading the way for Woodson who was a pre-season All American but Woodson was lost for the year to injury in the fourth game against Iowa. QB Rich Bader and soph end Trent Walters tried to pick up the slack and Nowatzke was an iron man performer, backing up the line well and as a junior, setting an IU rushing mark of 756 yards, but it was another 3-6 year, this time with a loss to Purdue. With a strong first team and little quality depth behind them, a typical IU team, Dickens entered 1964 with optimism. QB Bader throwing to ends Walters and Bill Malinchak, with All American FB Nowatzke providing the power seemed like a "can't miss" collection of players. In the line guard-LB Don Croftcheck who would have a brief career with the Redskins was solid. 2-3 after five games, the bottom fell out and the team finished at 2-7. Nowatzke moved on to the Detroit Lions (see his featured helmet on the Detroit Lions section of HELMET HUT'S NFL site) and Dickens was asked to move on at the end of the season.
