Ron Kramer

 Passing away September 11, 2010

It is always sad for older football fans to read the obituary column and note the passing of yet another former great player. The reminder that we are all mortal can be frightening, especially when the player who passes seemed at times to be immortal and indestructible. Ron Kramer was such a player and such a man. As a great athlete and three sport All State selection at East Detroit High School, it perhaps was a natural choice to continue his athletic career at the University Of Michigan so that he could become part of their great athletic tradition. The emphasis with Kramer was not necessarily upon “football” as per the statements made above related to his “athletic career” and the “athletic tradition” of Michigan, but rather, it was upon having a true athletic career. He surely did as a legend that was awarded nine varsity letters who for two seasons led both the football and basketball teams in scoring, and was a key member of the track and field squad.

In an era of limited offense and scoring on both the gridiron and hardwood, Kramer was the basketball team’s three year MVP, a Second or Third Team All Conference selection in each varsity season, team captain, and for a number of years, the record holder for career points scored. A two-time All American on the football field, his jersey is only one of five retired by the University, leading him to a ten year NFL career. As part of the great Packers championship squads under Vince Lombardi, Kramer was one of the first of the prototype great tight ends, using athletic skill that allowed him to set high jump records despite his 230 pound frame, teaming with Mike Ditka and John Mackey in defining the position for the modern era. That he completed his final three years with his hometown Detroit Lions, then and now brought delight to the organization and local fans. The recipient of numerous awards, Ron Kramer put as much time and effort into community service and contributions to local organizations that won him fans long after his retirement. There is no doubt that he will be missed by those who knew him and his many fans.
