Gophers 1953

(Game Worn)

These Wes Fesler coached teams are best remembered for the accomplishments of Winona, MN native, Paul Giel.  Giel was twice named Big Ten MVP.  In 1953, the two-time All-American was named the Associated Press Back of the Year and the UPI Player of the Year.  He finished second to Notre Dame’s Johnny Lattner in the second-closest Heisman Trophy voting in history.  Also a baseball All-American at U of M, he returned to his alma mater following his professional career to serve as director of athletics.  His #10 jersey was officially retired on Sept. 24, 1991.
