1962 Leo Nomellini

Authentic Reproduction

"Sometimes the old stuff just fits better" -- it would be rather crazy for someone to argue with Leo Nomellini and his preference for still using this vintage early 1950s Wilson model "RP" (rubber & plastic composition shell) helmet as late as the 1962 season. Not only could Leo overpower any opponent on the gridiron but he is also remembered for his off season job as a champion professional wrestler. Prior to the 1962 season Leo did wear a Riddell "husky" (extra large) helmet for a brief period before returning to his "old favorite."

Remove the 1962 period stripes, logos and Riddell "BD-9" facemask from this helmet and it may be more recognizable as the helmet of choice for 1950s era 49er greats such as Joe "The Jet" Perry, Hugh "The King" McElhenny and Y.A. Tittle. The 49ers predominately wore Wilson helmets in the 1950s and slowly converted to Riddell helmets during the 1960s and 1970s. It's so great to find pictures of 49er players such as John Brodie, Charlie Krueger, John David Crow and Bob St. Clair wearing those distinctive "bubble ear" Wilson helmets in the early 1960s.
